Do you feel that you are not particularly practical? Are you worried that you will not manage, that the fabric will crease, that you will glue it incorrectly or ruin your lampshade? You are not alone. That is exactly how 80% of people feel before they begin.
And yet, making a lampshade is much easier than you might imagine.
When we began designing our kits and refining our method, we spent months testing every detail: the right materials, the wrong techniques, the most common mistakes, the moments of uncertainty and the steps that build confidence. Thanks to all this work, we can say one thing with complete confidence:
If you follow the method step by step, you will succeed.
Even if you do not think you are practical.
Even if it is your first time.
Even if you have no previous crafting experience.
Why? Because making a lampshade is not a question of talent or dexterity. It is a question of method, pace and clear guidance.
That is precisely what we have created: a simple, structured approach designed for beginners and developed to deliver a neat, even and professional result. You may be surprised by what your hands can achieve when they are shown the right techniques.
To help you begin with confidence, here are our essential tips: reassuring advice that prevents small mistakes and turns a first attempt into a creation you will be proud of.
The essential materials for a successful result
The success of your lampshade does not depend solely on technique.
Above all, it depends on the materials you use — and that makes all the difference.
We select the same components used by professional lampshade makers, because the quality of the materials accounts for around 70% of the finished result.
- 30/100 Polyphane, rigid enough to provide excellent long-term structure while remaining easy and reassuring to handle.
- A template precision-cut to the nearest millimetre, eliminating measuring errors, uneven cutting and the worry of getting it wrong.
- Premium black rings made in France, chosen for their stability and impeccable finish.
- A carefully selected fabric that is easy to handle, diffuses light beautifully and applies far more easily than standard cotton.
The kit brings all these professional materials together in one place. There is no need to search, compare products, buy components separately or hope that you have chosen the right materials: everything is prepared, calibrated and coordinated to make the process simple from beginning to end.
With the right materials, half the work is already done — which is precisely why success feels not only possible, but natural.

The most common mistakes — and how to avoid them
Not taking your time, rushing or skipping the instructions. It may sound obvious, but it is essential. Relax and enjoy the process: everything will be fine.
Ignoring the direction of the fabric pattern. If your fabric has a directional design, position it the right way up — birds with their heads upside down may find it difficult to fly.
Not leaving a fabric allowance around the template after it has been applied. Without this extra fabric, you will not be able to roll the edges around the rings.
Leaving an allowance of less than 1.2 cm. This will not provide enough fabric to roll neatly around the rings during finishing.
For the closing seam, do not forget to apply double-sided tape along the entire length, including the fabric allowance.
Not smoothing the adhesive firmly enough around the rings, which can leave ripples or uneven sections.
Beginning with the ring that carries the bulb holder without first making sure the fitting faces inwards.
For cylindrical lampshades, assembling a table-lamp shade when you intended to make a pendant shade. This is a classic mistake. Position the ring with the bulb-holder fitting at the bottom for a table lamp and at the top for a pendant light.
Cutting the fabric too deeply around the three spokes of the ring. Roll the fabric around the rings rather than into the inner edge of the Polyphane.
10 tips that make assembly wonderfully simple
1. Prepare all your materials before you begin.
An organised workspace builds confidence and makes every step easier.
2. Work on a flat, well-lit surface.
A stable table and good lighting make all the difference: you see more clearly and work more accurately.
3. You can iron the fabric, although it is rarely necessary.
Our fabrics are selected because they crease very little. Gently smoothing them by hand is often enough.
4. For smaller models, up to 25 cm in diameter, you can remove the entire gridded backing at once.
Position the Polyphane in one movement on the reverse of the fabric, then smooth it down firmly: simple, quick and effective.
5. Aim for consistency, not perfection.
A successful lampshade is above all harmonious. Handmade pieces are not meant to look mechanically perfect.
6. Roll the fabric around one ring at a time.
There is no need to do everything at once. Begin with a few centimetres on the first ring, then move to the second.
7. Adapt your tool if necessary.
The tool used to tuck in the fabric can be shortened to fit your hand. It should always feel comfortable to use.
8. Use the tool for two purposes: tucking the fabric under the ring and smoothing away any small loose threads.
It gives you greater control and creates a neat, professional edge.
9. Hold the lampshade between your hands at thigh level while rolling the edges.
Additional tip — Finishing binding is optional and depends on your style.
Finishing binding creates a perfectly neat and structured edge, but it is important to be clear: it is by no means essential.
Some people prefer a very pared-back finish without binding, allowing the fabric to speak for itself. Others enjoy the additional detail of a contrasting or tone-on-tone finish.
Both options are equally valid. It is simply a matter of taste, the atmosphere you want to create and your personal style. Choose the finish that feels most like you.
10. Find a natural working position so that the movement becomes fluid and intuitive.
When applying the binding, begin approximately 1 cm before the seam. Peel away only 5 cm of the protective backing at a time so that you remain in control.
To check that the binding is even, bring it to eye level. The material's transparency allows you to see immediately whether it is correctly aligned.
Rotate the lampshade, not the binding.
This is the simplest way to maintain a steady movement and achieve a perfectly even result. Peel back a longer section of binding, keep it under gentle tension and rotate the lampshade with your other hand.
