The right lampshade size depends on the lamp base, its fitting and the available space. If your current shade works well, its measurements are the most useful starting point for a replacement.
Measure your current shade
Measure the bottom diameter, top diameter and height. On our product pages, 25 × 15 × 20 cm means a 25 cm bottom diameter, 15 cm top diameter and 20 cm height. A drum shade has equal top and bottom diameters. Check the position of its fitting ring too: outer dimensions alone do not establish compatibility.
Balance the lamp’s proportions
A slim base and a sculptural base call for different volumes. A visual balance of roughly two thirds base and one third shade can be a starting point, adjusted to the design. It is not a fitting rule. A paper outline placed beside the lamp can help compare sizes; do not switch the lamp on with paper nearby.
Consider the furniture and use
On a bedside table, leave room for everyday objects. On a console, consider the lamp alongside artwork and neighbouring objects. The shade height should also conceal the bulb appropriately from your usual viewing position.
Check before ordering
Check the fitting, clearance around the bulb and the lamp manufacturer’s instructions. A larger diameter does not guarantee compatibility. If you are unsure, send us a photo of the whole lamp, a close-up of its fitting and your measurements.
