For a floor lamp, choose a shade designed for a lamp base, then check its diameter, height and fitting. The right model should balance the base and suit your living room or reading area.
Drum or conical?
A drum lampshade creates an even volume that works well with contemporary lines. A conical shade narrows towards the top and creates a different silhouette. Either may suit a floor lamp, depending on its proportions and the actual fitting.
Choose a size for the room
Measure the old shade if you want to keep the same balance. Look at the floor lamp beside the armchair, sofa and other furniture. An overly wide shade may obstruct a walkway; a small one may look lost on a substantial base. Check the view from a seated position, especially whether the bulb will be visible.
Check the fitting
Our shades for lamp bases have an E27 fitting and an E14 reducer ring. This does not make them compatible with every floor lamp. Harp, clip-on and other specialist fittings need an individual check. A pendant shade is designed for a different mounting arrangement and should not be chosen on shape alone.
Choose the fabric
A pattern can pick up a colour from a rug, painting or cushion. In a room with several prints, keep the relationship between colours clear. For reading, consider the bulb and the way the whole lamp directs light: fabric colour alone does not determine the lighting result.
